Posted September 10th, 2006 by AnonymousFollowing a meeting on 7th September as a followup to the Camp for Climate Action, a group of campaigners, students, anarchists and greens based in and around York agreed to create a network for environmental action within the city and its surrounding areas. The aims of this are firstly, to help co-ordinate existing campaigning being done by small and disparate groups as is, and secondly, to facilitate and encourage further action.
The next meeting will be held in a venue to be confirmed, on 21st September. To subscribe to the e-mail list for this group send an e-mail to yorkecoaction-subscribe@lists.riseup.net
Climate camp followup meeting // 7th September // Friends Meeting House, York
Posted September 5th, 2006 by AnonymousThis summer saw ecological action take centre stage in the country's media for a brief moment, as hundreds of campaigners converged in Selby to camp in the shadow of Drax power station, largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the UK. Groups and individuals from across the UK and beyond defied mass police presence and a legal injunction to make their presence felt outside (and, for some, inside) a target which for many represents the failings of the current system of energy production.
Largely ignored by the press were the energetic discussions held throughout the camp on practical ways forward for ecological action. While mass, visible actions such as those taken during the camp serve to raise the profile of the problems facing our planet, concrete change is only possible through sustained, ongoing action of a diverse nature.
For this reason, a group of climate camp participants based in York invites you to an open meeting at the Friends Meeting House, Friargate. The purpose of this meeting is firstly, to discuss the camp for climate action, its consequences, influence and experience; and secondly, to discuss ways forward for environmental action in and around the York area. With the threat of an incinerator on the horizon, increased housing development, rising air pollution and areas of Yorkshire at risk of flooding, ecological issues are human issues that cannot be ignored. This meeting is open to any and all, from experienced activists to the simply curious.

The Camp for Climate Action has been hailed as a success, with an impressive collective commitment to organising the camp in an environmentally-friendly way, and with hundreds of people just over half way through a packed programme of workshops. One statement said:
"What has really stuck me is the way in which everyone who has come to the camp is getting involved. People from all walks of life and with all sorts of previous experiences are here, and everyone is doing thier bit to make the camp tick. From action planning to compost toilet building, everyone is getting involved..." [read more] See also today's pictures from inside the camp.
Climate Change Camp established
Posted August 27th, 2006 by AnonymousThe Climate camp is now well established. A few hundred activists are settled in and having a great time. Workshops on everything from Deep ecology to Direct Action training and Salsa are going on as I type this.
There is a sizeable police presence around the site but, as yet, they are being relatively friendly. Being welcomed at the station by a policeman greeter who directed us to where the shuttlebus was waiting was quite a nice experience but they have already started to get impatient and they have imposed a Section 60 notice.
