event not happening

Please note this Civic event didn't come together (apologies, forgot I'd posted it here) - events at York St Johns instead, see below.

Location of HMD in York

It is a pity this event is to be held in York's Guildhall rather than in the public space near Clifford's Tower as it has been in recent years.

Clifford's Tower is the scene of York's own mini-holocaust in 1190 when 150 Jews were slaughtered.

If one is seriously jaundiced about the motives of the City of York Council, one might wonder whether they would prefer to divorce Clifford's Tower from this association as it would make it easier to build a shopping mall on the site in future years.

I think it sanitises Holocaust Memorial Day in York to remove it from Clifford's Tower and hold it in the Council's Guildhall.

Cure For Jaundice!

As the organiser of the Cliffords Tower HMD events in previous years I'm in a good position to say this isn't a conspiracy!

Basically a lot of the older participants from previous years had requested an indoor event instead because they suffer somewhat from standing in the freezing January cold (not so cold this year but sure has been previous years!)

As it goes the Guildhall event didn't come together in the end, but York St Johns stepped in with a very moving event last Tuesday, a lecture from Holocaust survivor Dr Eva Schloss - hundreds of people there, tickets ran out, really good.

And there's another event at St Johns next week, a play about Anne Frank, details here:

Next year we're going to try to organise a week of even bigger and better events, anyone wanting to help please contact Ben c/o Unison 01904 553490.
