Critical Mass comes to York
Some 60-70 cyclists toured the streets of York on what is planned to be a monthly mass ride on the evening of the first Friday in the month. Placards tied to riders' backs and leaflets for passers by indicated 'We are not holding up traffic- we ARE traffic!' and 'Make space for bikes'.
Child buggies, bikes of various shapes and cylcists very young and not so young took part. A sound system played carnival type music - together with bell ringing we got lots of attention. On the whole the event got a positive response from pedestrians and motorists, although there was one aggressive van driver. It certainly felt good to have enough riders to fill the dual carriageway sections on the inner ring road and experience riding there without having to worry about vehicles squeezing you into the gutter as they pass.
The cyclists stuck together, had lights and got over a positive message without getting into confrontation with drivers. The last part riding through the old streets drew smiles and waves from the restaurants and bars along the way. We finished at Space 109 on Walmgate with a film from the States about the origins of Critical Mass rides and the experiences as the event developed.
Thank you everyone for coming and to those who helped make it a success. Watch out for any letters in the local press and tell them about the message from the film - its about reclaiming the space for everyone, not trying to wind up those who have to drive about in their metal boxes on wheels!
