Yorkshire Evening Press
York Indymedia has come along at just the right time. The local Yorkshire Evening Press, now "The Press", has gone horribly downhill and downmarket recently.
Not only has it become very tabloid in style, running lots of scary crime stories, but it also sides with the establishment against the population of York. An example is that the City of York Council now has an automatic right of reply to any letters which are written to The Press which are critical of the Council.
This is unusual in the UK and just gives additional power to people who already have power. No other organisations or companies are given an immediate and automatic right of reply. Ordinary citizens are already at a disadvantage when making complaints about the Council, and especially so if the local paper is allowing itself to be used as a mouthpiece for the Council.
Good job for York that we now have York Indymedia, for unbiased news where ordinary people are back on an even playing field with the establishment.

YEP e-mailing
I tried to send this to the YEP.
Hey fellow citizens of York.
I was born in York in 1935 and moved to Lincolnshire in 1975.
I Googled the name above and came to your site where I read the following.
"Bill Bearpark, 62, of Holgate, does not want a war, but believes Saddam must be dealt with. He said: "I just wish he had been taken out 12 years ago. I'm not really supportive of the war - but I've got a lot of support for our boys."
I don't suppose you have an e-mail address for him. We were both in the TA at Lumley Barracks in the sixties. I wondered if he would like a copy on DVD of the video I made from ciné film taken at the annual camps.?
He is on the back row of the photograph - 6th from left. Over forty years ago! Not many of us left these days.
The Press 0wnz you
I notice The Press now accepts comments on their articles, though who knows how they moderate them. AND they claim copyright on everything posted. Please generate content for us, and then we own it. Huh?
That's why we need a print version
I really want to get a print version of IndyMedia going so that people can post their own stuff on here, and then a group site down in a pub and produce a proper newsheet. Nothing fancy, two sides of A4, with the weeks/fortnights events on it, and some stories from the city.
But alas, we're not getting enough stories posted on here to put it up. Surely there's more stuff going on in York! Anyhow, there's two things people can do to help right now, one's publish your news, the others telling friends about the site!
