Faslane 365

A pathetic waste of time and effort. Do these protestors really think they are making a difference? Why travel all that distance only to run out onto a road, lock on knowing full well that the police will come along and cut you free then arrest you ? You give the impression of sad human 'lemmings' throwing yourselves off a cliff just to make a point ! WOW that sure will make a difference to the Trident debate !!!!!!!!!

Direct action and civil disobedience

Direct action and civil disobedience have made a huge and positive difference in our world.

Do what you can to try and make a difference in this world or snipe from the sidelines in a comment section of a website - your choice I suppose.

Sorry but I disagree - the

Sorry but I disagree - the only people who are losing out of these actions are the local community who have to put up with all the sad protestors who beleive their efforts are making a difference. They have no impact whatsoever to the base or the Government decision on Trident, never have and never will. As for dressing up as Vikings and having what appears to be a 'jolly good time' suggests you really have nothing better to do with your lives....let me guess middle class further education background?

Well at least you middle

Well at least you middle class eduction was put to good use in the English Department. Well Done !
The actions that I have commented about (people dressed as Vikings lying on a roadway somewhere in Scotland)are still in my opinion pathetic attempts of civil disobedience. How long did you close the base ? From what I can gather from locals attending the base your colleagues lying on the roadway at the North Gate were 'sidelined' by Strathclyde Officers that allowed the work traffic to still gain entry to the base whilst other. True or False?
What media attention did you gain apart from your own pictures in local Yorkshire press or placed into various websites?
Your attempts at focusing the attention of the world at Faslane amounted to nothing more than a feeble attempt to make yourselves feel good. By travelling over 200 mile to wear fancy dress and get arrested makes you feel as if you have done your bit for 'Faslane 365'! Pathetic. In 20 years time when the Trident has been replaced -- will you still be 'A viking'? (No I think not) - you'll have a job with responsibilities. Do yourselves a favour .... GROW UP and stop feeling so bad about being unable to stop an elected Government doing what the nation wants it to do - providing protection!
You'll be glad to know that this is my last entry ... Goodbye!

The publicity value

It's interesting our visiting troll mentions the (corporate national) media attention with the intention of focusing world attention.

I was actually really impressed by the way that the local media reports were noticed by people I know - who wouldn't normally be to interested in 'politics' of this sort.
I was also suprised by the number of people who were drawn into involvement in, or awareness of, the campaign through the pre-publicity and fundraising. Again, people who would not notice a letter writing campaign, mainstream news, what their MP is doing etc.

Roll that over more cities, as the Faslane 365 campaign is doing, and it is an excellent devolved way of raising awareness and including people in a direct way in the issue.

urmmmm

Most Scottish people I know object to the fact that that the government chose to locate the submarine base within their borders, this as well as the experimental dodgy fast-breed nuclear reactor at Douneray up in the far north. As far as I can tell, the local community in Faslane pretty much supports any direct-action protests against the base, it being perceived as being "dumped" on them by an "English" government, in a location that should it be targeted by a nuclear power would not affect the politicians in London.

As for your guess that the protesters were from a "middle class further education background" - well, some may have been, but the issue of whether or not the continuation of an anachronistic nuclear deterrent is immoral or not transcends class distinction and shouldn't be an issue, and certainly not a bat to hit protesters with!!!

I find your posts infantile, pregnant with predudice and lacking substance - maybe you should think twice before letting your fingers dance erroneously across a keyboard again!

Of course these actions are having an effect on the Trident debate. . . direct-action is, and has been an effective methodology for individuals and groups to demonstrate opposition to governments and other agencies of authority throughout history, indeed, it is probably one of the last valid forms of protest left!

The propostion to replace Trident is irrational, outrageous and immoral. I welcome all forms of opposition and applaud those taking part in the Faslane blockade and do not see it as "a pathetic waste of time and effort".
