Councillor welcomes indymedia launch
The meeting to launch the York Indymedia project had support from a city of York councillor, who said it represents a valuable means of different groups working together more on areas of common interest. The site has been set up by some activists who explained to the meeting the open democratic process of Indymedia news and the way in which local news posted in York might be accessed by people anywhere in the world.
It was also explained that the policy was non party political, so that something purely promoting a political party would not be carried but a talk on a topic organised by a political party might be. Andy D'Agorne who has been an environmental and peace activist for many years spoke about how the community newspapers of 20 years ago have now been largely replaced by websites and email lists.
However it was agreed that in order to raise awareness and be inclusive, a paper version was an important additional feature. It is hoped that this paper version featuring details of a range of meetings from the calendar will be available in outlets around YOrk and at University Freshers events.
