450 jobs to go at Norwich Union
Posted September 15th, 2006 by Anonymous
Norwich Union have just announced a swathe of job cuts incluing 450 in York.
This'll have a huge impact locally, and follows on from major job losses at Nestle, British Sugar, and Fastline (one of the out-sourced rail depots).
Local Trade Unionists are discussing possible courses of action and perhaps the need for a broader campaign (through Trades Council?) over the big picture - will try to keep IndyMedia updated.
Also just to mention national campaigns gearing up in defence of our publicly-funded NHS and for Fair Pensions For All - again more details soon.

City of York Council
Do you know that the City of York Council has a senior post entitled "Manager of the Local Economy"?
Makes you wonder if he's been asleep at the wheel...
Trades Council?
I know its nice to use existing networks, my impression is that Trades Council is a non-starter. Wouldn't it be better to build a campaign along the lines of "Save Our Economy"? That could be a grassroots group that covers the job losses, the fears for local retailers of a new superstore (on the York Central Site?) and NHS stuff and Pensions stuff.
