Critical Mass in Daylight
Today York saw its first 'Summer Time' Critical Mass bike ride in some years, with around 20 riders (again!) turning out to communicate the importance of cycling to passers by and car drivers alike. The longest ride of the 6 so far (7.2miles), the ride saw locals and visitors head out around York's eastern and southern suburbs. Our visitors were two students from Middlesbrough, who'd cycled in to stay with friends.
The group headed out through Gillygate, the Groves and Heworth, to spend time in and around Tang Hall, before heading in along Hull Road, out on Fishergate, across Millenium Bridge, through South Bank to finish with a ride in along Blossom Street, past the station and back to the Minster.
On arrival at the Minster, the ride was met by a group of police officers. However, they were there for different reasons: the Good Friday Cross Procession had just arrived a few minutes beforehand. A police officer walked over and told the riders "we've had reports that you've been taking up the whole lane, which you are perfectly entitled to do, we just want to make sure you stay safe".
