Big week for York

Date:
30 Apr 2007

This week will be a busy one for the city of York, as citizens head to the polls on Thursday. Many will be hoping that BNP votes are kept to a minimum, with Acomb one of the more worrying areas. Final leafleting rounds will be undertaken, in the hope of ensuring as many votes cast for 'positive parties'. As both Labour and Lib Dems are seen by many as having failed the city, the results could be interesting.

More interesting will be the events surrounding the count, delayed until Friday morning because of the number of postal votes to be verified. Campaigners will assemble from 10.30am onwards to hold a vigil outside Oaklands Sports Centre where the count is to take place. It shall be interesting to see how many of York's BNP clique turnout, presumably suited and booted, to see their (hopefully) small number of votes counted.

Friday evening will see the city's streets being reclaimed by Critical Mass, once again providing an hour of fun for the city's harassed cyclists. With the results in, and with the last few rides heading mostly North and East, will we head West? All welcome, ride assembles from 5.30pm outside the Minster, and heads off at 6pm. With the sun shining, it should be enjoyable.

And Sunday will see the city burst forth with hundreds of performers and a procession for the York Carnival 2007. Many local bands, world music groups and dance troupes will be out to show off their talents. The theme is sustainability and, apparently, some Critical Mass folks will be joining the procession on bikes (How slow can you go?) to share the message of Critical Mass and Cycling. The event aims to bring together University, Schools and Community Groups and will involve events across town throughout the afternoon.
