Two World-touring Political Artists to play York gig

Date:
15 Jul 2007

The Gig has had to be moved to Kennedy's, which is on Little Stonegate (visible from Stonegate itself).

On October 10th, David Rovics and Attila the Stockbroker will be performing at Judges Lodgings in York. Along with Tracey Curtis, the two will performs songs and poetry they've written over recent years about war, New Labour, the environment, civil liberties, Latin America and Palestine. Tickets will cost £7 + £5 when they go on sale in a months time.

David Rovics is American, and sings about life in Bush's America, and indeed life in Bush's World. He's currently on tour in Japan, to which he will return during the G8 next year, and toured Germany, Denmark and Sweden during June of this year. He has visited Britain 3 times since he came for the G8 in Scotland. His biggest performances are nearly always rallies, as he still plays people's living rooms and community centres as a self-publicising artist outside the commercial record labels grips.

Attila the Stockbroker has been performing for decades, both as a poet and as part of various different bands. His work, like David's, is often critical of the empty commercialism that is seeking to invade our lives, and attacks the media which so often skews our outlook on the world. He recently performed at Glastonbury yet again, and runs his own festival, Glastonwick, which is described as a "beer, poetry, music and more beer festival". He's the resident poet of his local soccer club, Brighton FC, attending every one of their home games.

This is probably the biggest political music event to come to York in several years, and hopefully won't be the last. It should be as informative as it is fun, and definitely a night to remember. Places to get Tickets will be announced on this site nearer the time.

'Cause we got our IMC

"And CNN will spread the lies
This is just how it's gotta be
Well they can have their CNN
'Cause we got our IMC
And we will tell the truth quite clearly
Though they don't want to hear it
And they'll try to stop our broadcasts
'Cause the truth is that they fear it"

Vanguard by David Rovics

Worker's World says that they have all the answers
And Milosevic is a guy that they admire
The ISO says Trotsky is the man
And they'll debate it until they all expire
The industrial workers will lead the revolution
So claims the SWP
No, the truth lies among the lumpen
That's the RCP

The Sparts say the rest can go to hell
And everyone else is a Stalinist
The CP will just do their thing
And pretend the others don't exist
Well I had a realization this morning
When I looked into the red and dawning sun
I've figured out the truth
And I'm forming a party of one

(Chorus)
I am the leader of the workers
And I'll tell you why the Left is circumspect
Because there's something you don't understand
Only my line is correct
'Cause I am the vanguard of the masses
And all of you should just follow me
If you doubt my analysis
You must be in the petty bourgeoisie

But I am not sectarian
It's all the rest who are
I work fine in coalitions
As long as I'm the shining star
So bow down to your master
The lastest V.I. Lenin
And off to the camps to all of you
Who'd say, "not this again"

'Cause I am the leader of the workers...
...I'll fill your head with propaganda 'til you agree

And I'll have no music at my protests
And none of that goddamn puppetry
I'll just have some somber slogans
No decadent frivolity
My chants will be the right ones
Just the ones that should be said
And my banners we'll wave proudly
Just the proper shade of red

And I will build the party if it kills me
I am solely dedicated to the cause
If I have to stab you in the back
This won't give me pause
'Cause my platform will take us forward
And the ends always justify the means
And you must step aside behind me
Be you Quakers, Jews, anarchists or greens

'Cause I am the leader of the workers...
...I'll make sure that you agree
