Green Festival a sunny success

Several hundred people enjoyed a day of music and sustainability in the sun at York's first Green Festival this year. After months of planning and wrangling with the odd less-than-helpful council official, the event went off without a hitch. Stalls promoting everything from radical direct action to composting and organic foods gave out information on ways people can contribute to a more sustainable world. 6 bands performed on the stage, and DJ's mixed all day in the main bit of the park, except for the times when a cycle-mounted punch and judy show was keeping the kids entranced. There was even a solar cinema just outside the park showing various films. The event drew in a very wide crowd, including regular park users.
Amongst the stalls were familiar names like Fairer World, York Rotters, Friends of the Earth and Critical Mass (and of course, Indymedia!), alongside some interesting groups like York Action For Animals, the Local Economy Trading Scheme (YorkLETS) and Curry makers AzSpiceyAz. Even the St Nick's Field recycling collection vehicle was on hand to help with the clean up afterwards. All in all, a great day, only a few spots of rain and high hopes of a repeat next year, but only if more people agree to take on the various tasks.
