Protesters say No to Star Wars in North Yorkshire

More than 40 people attended this year's Fylingdales event in Keep Space 4 Peace week. The annual event coincided with visits by protesters to many bases around the world that are connected to Bush's plans for missile defence.

Speakers from Yorkshire CND handed over a letter to the base commander, and Bradford Samba Band provided music for the walk up the hill. Thankfully, someone put up a small marquee and invited veggies, as the heavens opened as the protest was concluding.

A speaker brought news that Canada has rejected Missile Defence, the project that would lead to weaponisation of space. Its hoped the British government will follow suit, but Blair seems keen to remain shoulder to shoulder. The base also emits strong radar that studies show may be harmful to human beings.

US plans to weaponise space as part of the so-called ‘Missile Defence’ or ‘Star Wars’ programme are proceeding at a rapid rate. RAF Fylingdales is a crucial base for these plans and will be part of a global network designed solely to allow the US to launch pre-emptive attacks across the world, free from fear of retaliation. Having the weapons in our back yard will put the surrounding area under all kinds of risk, from accidental detonation to terrorism.
