Music to Change the World by: Attila and Rovics @ Kennedy's
Posted September 28th, 2007 by GrahamFor the first time ever, American protest singer/songwriter David Rovics plays in York, alongside Attila the Stockbroker and Tracey Curtis. Promises to be a great night of entertainment and politics.
Rovics has performed at some of the biggest American anti-war demonstrations, received an award in Palestine for his work promoting Palestinian Human Rights causes, and written songs about a huge array of issues, from the illogical policies of the Bush era and the inadequate response to New Orleans, to historic protest movements and places which have become forgotten victims of recent wars.
Attila describes himself as a punk-poet, who's work is critical of modern pop-culture's often shallow world-view, tabloid misrepresentation of asylum seekers and New Labour's many injustices, not least the Iraq war.
Tracey lives in Wales, and writes all her songs for one or other of her children. An up-and-coming protest folk artist, she's definitely a worthwhile support artist.
Green Festival a sunny success
Posted August 1st, 2007 by GrahamSeveral hundred people enjoyed a day of music and sustainability in the sun at York's first Green Festival this year. After months of planning and wrangling with the odd less-than-helpful council official, the event went off without a hitch. Stalls promoting everything from radical direct action to composting and organic foods gave out information on ways people can contribute to a more sustainable world. 6 bands performed on the stage, and DJ's mixed all day in the main bit of the park, except for the times when a cycle-mounted punch and judy show was keeping the kids entranced.
