BNP fail to leave mark on York
Posted May 5th, 2007 by AnonymousAfter the votes were counted, the BNP were left to lick their wounds after a performance that failed to give them a seat, nor any particular sense of victory. However, this doesn't mean we've seen the last of them, as stated in their announcement to the local newspaper that they now have a better idea of where to focus next time. In Acomb, where their leader of sorts, Ian Dawson, stood, they made it to 520 votes, just over 3% of those cast. A vote for Dawson appeared on around 1 in 20 of the ballots cast.
BNP organiser on the loose
Posted May 1st, 2007 by AnonymousAfter last nights anti-fash leafleting when Holgate, Acomb and Westfield were targeted, Leeman Road was today's target. Some 500 houses got leaflets, with a few incidents to report. Funniest was when someone emerged from a house to attack an anti-fascist because they mis-read the leaflet that had just landed on there doormat. After apologising and chatting, she joined in the leafleting trip. Coming to the end of the trip, a car appeared in the area, a turquoise Hyundi, reg P127 JWA, stopped mid way down a street, and then backed up slowly following a campaigner.
Election Count Anti-BNP Vigil (NOW 10:30)
Posted April 29th, 2007 by AnonymousAs the BNP assemble to claim their arrival on York's political scene, we shall assemble to make it clear that hatred and violence have no place in this City's civic life. With any luck, we might even get some decent placards made up.

Anti-BNP coordinating meeting (York UAF)
Posted April 21st, 2007 by GrahamWith many offers of support to our campaign to mobilise against the BNP, one might feel that there was enough going. Sadly, this isn't the case. Reports of leafleting are emerging from absolutely every corner of York, and its vital that we get more people involved as we draw to the end of this rather hurried campaign. So please come along and find out what you can do to help; there's only 2 more weeks of this to go!
During the meeting dates and times will be set for various leafleting operations around the city, especially in the Acomb wards (Saturdays) and Heworth/Hull Road (probably Sunday). We need to set up leafleting in other areas ASAP.

Across the country the BNP are standing an alarming 800+ candidates in local elections, with independent sources suggesting they could succeed with over 100 of these candidates.
The BNP are standing in York for the first time, with a worrying nine candidates; some of whom cover student areas such as Tang Hall, Lawrence Street, Heslington Road and Badger Hill. As part of the ongoing Unity campaign to raise awareness and actively oppose the BNP, Unity and Indie Soc have joined forces to set up a LMHR event in order to encourage people to use their vote on the 3rd May.

Mass leafletting - Acomb, Saturday 21st April, meet 10am outside Farmfoods
Meeting - Monday 23rd April, 7pm in the Denham Room, Priory Street Centre
Unite Against Fascism Emergency Public Meeting
Posted April 6th, 2007 by GrahamNominations for the May 3rd local elections in York closed yesterday, and the bad news is that the BNP are standing in nine wards, one candidate in each. We don't know how many of these will be proper campaigns as opposed to 'paper' candidates, nevertheless it calls for a firm response from us and our supporters.
The good news is that we are getting more and more offers of support from individuals and groups outraged by the BNP's attempt to stir up trouble in our city, from residents' groups, Churches and other faith groups, trade unions, students and anti-racists from all backgrounds and across the political spectrum.
It's vitally important that we turn this support into action, counter-leafletting wherever the BNP go door-to-door, opposing them publicly, showing that the majority reject their poison. To this end we're calling an organising meeting for the evening of Monday 16th April, at 7pm in the Denham Room at the Priory Street Centre (off Micklegate).
Please attend if you can, and bring friends. If you can't make it, do please let us know if you can help with leafleting or fundraising to cover the cost of the leaflets we'll be printing.

BNP National Organiser found in Acomb
Posted January 22nd, 2007 by AnonymousSaturday's anti-fascist leafleting in Acomb saw 6 students from the University including leading member of the Islamic society and another 4 of us, so a good turn out. Public response was good.
The most notable event was that one Ian Dawson a BNP National Group Support Officer showed up towards the end and attempted to take photos of us (I recognised him from a photo, plus he eventually came clean when I confronted him for the second time.) He also gave out a few leaflets before disappearing. Another person later told me that he had overhead someone phoning Dawson up on his mobile telling Dawson that he had better come down. The Islamic soc guy told me that Dawson told him to "get out of his country".
